Tired of waiting for the Eee PC 1201T to ship? Impatient, aren't we? We've been wondering about the status of this here netbook since it came to light last November, and now it looks like the Germans are about to get a real, live taste of AMD's Congo platform. Boasting a 1.6GHz MV40 CPU, the same look and feel that we've grown accustomed to on Eee PC netbooks, 2GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, ATI HD3200 GPU and Windows 7 on the OS front, this is certainly one of the more unique machines in the sea of Atomized "me-toos." The pain? €399 ($560), and the first batch is expected to ship out tomorrow. Here's hoping the price dips somewhat when it makes its Stateside debut.

A new browser, two new Ubuntu releases, and more than one new netbook OS—2009 was a big year for open-source software. Here are the Linux-related posts that caught our readers' attention in 2009.

Last year, we compiled the most popular Linux downloads of 2008 and the most popular Linux posts. The most popular Linux downloads, however, tend to also be released for Windows and Mac systems, and we'd rather not repeat ourselves.

So! This year, we ran through our archives and pulled out the posts most directly related to Linux: informational, how-to, Linux-focused downloads, and the like. For good measure, though, we'll list the most popular cross-platform downloads at the end, which will look very familiar to those posted in our Most Popular Free Mac Downloads of 2009 and Most Popular Free Windows Downloads of 2009 posts.

Apple’s Purchase of Lala Could Signal Cheaper, Streaming iTunes (Updated)

posted Dec 5, 2009 9:49 AM by J iNestdia   [ updated Jan 20, 2010 10:54 AM ]

Apple has agreed to purchase the innovative, streaming music service LaLa, according to multiple reports (updated). LaLa fills a big hole in Apple’s digital music strategy and could bring streaming down music from the cloud into iTunes-ready devices everywhere.

Integrating Lala’s ad-free music service — which stores music collections online and sells streaming songs at a deep discount — would mark the first major step forward for iTunes since its music download store launched in 2003.

Lala recently announced a deal to play free songs on Google, but Apple is reportedly particularly interested in the engineers who built Lala’s “payment and fulfillment system[, which] could save Apple millions of dollars a year,” according to a CNET source. Lala sells music fans pre-paid chunks of music credits, rather than individual songs — an approach could help  iTunes cut down on its  credit card transaction costs and sell songs as streams and as downloads.

Samurai of Kuroda granted a cybernetic upgrade

Looking for a techno spin on the traditional, the Samurai of Kuroda have become assimilated into robot territory. They dance, they drink, they wield a great spear and use it to skewer flesh when you're not looking -- probably. Look for the creations at IREX 2009 and then after at RoboSquare in Kyushu. If you can't make it out, or want a preview, take a peep for yourself after the break.

Jailbroken iPhones hit by worm targeting bank details

It's never going to give you up

Security Experts have discovered a second worm attacking jailbroken iPhones. The worm sends users from a genuine banking website to a fake one farming for personal details.

- 10 of the strangest tech support queries

Virus experts F-Secure says that this worm has been adapted from the Rick Astley worm unleashed on the public two weeks ago.

This new and improved worm takes users trying to log into their ING bank accounts and redirects them to a fake site, where it stores your username and password. At present, it seems as though only Dutch users have been affected, however F-secure warns that it could easily spread across the continent.

The worm is easily spread across jailbroken iPhones sharing the same wireless connection. F-secure even go as far as saying that hackers could use the worm to create a network of compromised devices. Although, what exactly they’ll accomplish with such a network within the crippling battery life of the iPhone is a mystery.

By comparison the Rick Astley worm, which took over jailbroken iPhones and changed the handset’s wallpaper to a picture of Rick Astley accompanied by the words “ikee is never going to give you up”, seems relatively harmless.
